RESEARCH + PRACTICE
Sandra Tobias is a Melbourne based Artist and Art Educator. Her practice focuses on narratives of people, time, place and situation, incorporating community context, often reading as a diary of events.
Tobias has a Bachelor of Arts and Honours from RMIT, a Teaching Diploma, Melbourne University and has spent time teaching & exhibiting in Japan, Hong Kong, regional Victoria and Australia.
After a 4-year stint living in Hong Kong, she returned to regional Victoria to develop community and participatory arts projects; ‘Artist’s in the Rotunda’ (Castlemaine State Festival, 2007) and “Posted-it’s what was written!” Latrobe University Gallery Bendigo, Punctum, Incubator, Castlemaine and Federation Square in 2009.
Tobias has exhibited in-group and solo shows at Helen Gorie Gallery, Flinders Lane Gallery, Melbourne, Latrobe University Gallery Bendigo and Perth Institute of Contemporary Art. Her work is represented in several Australian and International collections. She has completed several Artist In Residencies at The Trades Hall Melbourne, ‘Bundanon’ Shoalhaven, NSW, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, Taipei Artists Village (Australia-China-Council 2005) and Scuola Grafica Venice 2015.
She currently lives in The People’s Republic of Brunswick and is a partner of an Art Walking Tour business ‘Behind 5 Doors’. In this somewhat frenetic pace of life she juggles parenting, teaching and producing her own work. She has a shared studio in Brunswick, producing work for her 2020 exhibition and developing her next arts project ‘My Maisonette’
