Remco Roes

RESEARCH + PRACTICE

Remco Roes is an artist and a postdoctoral researcher in the FRAME research group of the Faculty of Architecture and Arts at Hasselt University (Belgium). After completing a master degree in Architecture at the Technical University of Eindhoven (Netherlands) and working in the fringes of that discipline for a few years, he followed the Transmedia postgraduate program in Arts, Media and Design at LUCA School of Arts in Brussels. He subsequently obtained a practise-based PhD at Hasselt University: ‘Traversing the interior landscape: five dialogues in existential space’ (2016) which explores how a given everyday space can function as the basis for its own meaningful rearrangement.

In his artistic practice Roes works with fragments and spaces that he happens to find on his path. His – inevitably incomplete – collection of ‘observations’ is forced into temporary spatial order whenever it is exhibited, whilst Roes is attentively present on the given site or amongst the fragments. The resulting installations balance between speaking and remaining silent, between intention and coincidence, between purposeful work and the uselessness of residual space.
